Advantages of Cold Rolled Steel
CR Cold Rolled Carbon Steel Sheets

Greater strength:

Cold rolled steel can exhibit strength up to 20% greater than that of hot rolled steel, which makes it more suitable for use in high-stress applications.

Better surface finishes:

Parts and products made from cold rolled steel generally have a smooth and shiny surface that is free of rust and scale.

Higher precision:

Unlike hot rolled steel, cold rolled steel does not shrink after the forming process. This quality allows for the creation of highly precise components that require little to no secondary processing.

Cold Rolled Steel Properties

One of the most important properties is the high strength. The cold-rolling process increases the strength of the steel by 20%. It is preferred in mechanical applications as it is highly resistant to denting.

Furthermore, it also has high formability which makes it ideal even if you need to bend the steel sheet to a certain shape such as a bracket, u-channel, or z-channel. Also, it has excellent magnetic properties too. It makes it a preferred alloy for a wide range of industrial and domestic applications.

Enameling and color-coding cold rolled steel is possible. In fact, it is recommended as steel will corrode over time. By putting a protective layer of paint coating on it, the life of the metal will be increased to a great extent.

Application of Cold Rolled Steel

01/

Construction parts: In the construction industry, cold rolled steel is commonly used for manufacturing beams, columns, built-up sections, floor decking, and other essential metal components.

02/

Production machinery: Cold rolled steel is tested and proven to be potentially strengthened by up to 20%. In addition, cold rolling offers high stamping performance, excellent mechanical properties, and low yield strength.

03/

Metal furniture and home appliances: Due to its mechanical stress procedure, cold rolled steel displays a smooth and sturdy surface. It can also be rolled thinner by up to 50%, which makes it ideal for metal furniture and home appliances manufacturing. It does not only guarantee you longer service life, but it also offers a more visually appealing and aesthetic appearance.

04/

Automotive industry: Steel is a common part of the automotive industry. Cold rolled steel, in particular, is more commonly used over hot rolled steel due to its wear-resistant and shockproof qualities.

05/

Manufacturing industry: In the manufacturing industry, cold rolled steel is also a widely used steel material. Below are the following common cold rolled products:

Other uses: The uses of cold rolled steel are not limited to the above. It can also be used in many other applications

The Manufacturing Process Of Cold Rolled Steel
01.

Cold rolling:

The thickness accuracy of the cold rolled product is decided by this process. Computer control is employed for the controlling method.

02.

Cleaning:

Rolling oil on the cold rolled strip is burned off throughout this method which is next to cold rolling as mentioned above.

03.

Skin pass rolling:

Treated coils are gently rolled by the skin pass mill to prevent a defect referred to as stretcher strain to enhance strip shape and regulate mechanical properties.

04.

Finishing:

After skin pass rolling, coils are processed at the recoiling line, where they are cut to manufacture product coils.

Key Differences Between Hot Rolled Steel and Cold Rolled Steel

CCold Rolled Carbon Steel Sheet

Surface quality:

Hot rolled steel tends to have rough edges and surfaces that require decarburization or other treatments to prepare it for use in subsequent production operations. In contrast, cold rolled steel generally has a shiny and smooth surface that allows it to be used as-is in production operations.

Material hardness:

The cold rolling process produces steel with much higher strength and hardness than the steel produced by the hot rolling process.

Internal stress:

The greater material strength and hardness introduced by the cold rolling process comes with greater internal stresses. These stresses must be relieved before the material can be processed; otherwise, the final part or product may experience warping.

FAQ

Q: What is cold rolled steel?

A: Cold rolled steel is essentially hot rolled steel that has been further processed by being allowed to cool at room temperature and annealed or temper rolled. Cold rolling produces steel with closer dimensional tolerances and a wider range of surface finishes than hot rolling.

Q: Is cold rolled steel stronger than regular steel?

A: In terms of physical characteristics, cold rolled steels are typically harder and stronger than standard hot rolled steels. As the metal is shaped at the lower temperatures, the steel's hardness, resistance against tension breaking, and resistance against deformation are all increased due to work hardening.

Q: Is cold rolled steel the same as 1018?

A: As the most common (or at least one of them) cold-rolled steels in the world, 1018 is classed as a free-machining steel grade, meaning that small chips form when it's machined. This is a good thing as it makes it easier to work with and manipulate into whatever shape you need.

Q: What is another name for cold rolled steel?

A: Cold-formed steel (CFS) is the common term for steel products shaped by cold-working processes carried out near room temperature, such as rolling, pressing, stamping, bending, etc. Stock bars and sheets of cold-rolled steel (CRS) are commonly used in all areas of manufacturing.

Q: Can cold rolled steel be welded?

A: Yes, cold-rolled steel can be welded, and it's often preferred for welding applications due to its precise dimensions and cleaner surface, requiring less post-welding finishing.

Q: Can you machine cold rolled steel?

A: Machinability grades that are initially cold rolled to a pre-shape can offer better tool life, asset utilization, and performance in the machining process for our customers due to the increase in hardness and tensile strength that comes from cold rolling steel.

Q: Is cold-rolled steel hard to bend?

A: Because cold-rolled steel is less malleable at its natural temperature, there can be limitations to the available shapes of this product.
