Low Alloy Steel Plate

What is low alloy steel plate?

Low alloy steel refers to alloy steel with a total alloying element content of less than 5%. Low alloy steel is relative to carbon steel. On the basis of carbon steel, one or several alloying elements are intentionally added to the steel in order to improve the properties of the steel. When the amount of alloy added exceeds the normal content of carbon steel produced by normal production methods, the steel is called alloy steel.

Characteristics of low alloy plates

Low alloy plate is a kind of steel mainly composed of carbon, manganese, silicon and other elements, but it is different from ordinary steel plate in that a certain amount of alloying elements are added, such as vanadium, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, etc. These alloying elements can significantly improve the strength and corrosion resistance of steel. The characteristics of low alloy plates are as follows:

1. High strength: The strength of low alloy plate is more than 30% higher than that of ordinary carbon steel, so it is widely used in fields such as machinery manufacturing, construction and shipbuilding.

2. Good corrosion resistance: Low alloy plates add a certain amount of alloy elements, which can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of steel, especially in harsh environments, such as marine, chemical and other fields.

3. Good weldability: The low alloy plate has good weldability and can improve the strength and corrosion resistance after welding.

The difference between low alloy steel and high alloy steel

1、Different definitions

Low alloy steel refers to alloy steel with less than 5% total alloying elements. Low alloy steel is relative to carbon steel, is based on carbon steel, in order to improve the performance of the steel, and intentionally add one or more alloying elements to the steel. When the amount of alloy added exceeds the general content of carbon steel by normal production methods, the steel is called alloy steel.

High-alloy steel refers to the steel in the alloying elements in more than 10% of the alloy steel. Its brand name is crowned with the letter X, followed by the average carbon content of the number (parts per million) and alloying element symbols (arranged by content), and finally the average percentage of the content of the main alloying element is marked (rounded to the nearest whole number).

2、The nature of different:

The yield point of low-composite steel structural components determines the stress that the structure can withstand without permanent deformation. The minimum yield point of typical carbon structural steel is 235MPa. and the minimum yield point of typical low alloy high strength steel is 345MPa. therefore, according to the proportionality of its yield point, the use of low alloy high strength steel allowable stress than carbon structural steel 1.4 times higher.

High alloy steel after quenching and tempering, the organization are slat martensite, hardness is maintained at about 50HRC; corrosion resistance are slightly reduced, but still in a level, that is, the 7th level is still corrosion resistance. When the other components remain unchanged, molybdenum content reduced to 0.5%, the impact toughness of the specimen to improve.

3、Different uses:

Low-alloy steel in construction machinery, ships, bridges, high-rise buildings, boilers and pressure vessels, electric power, a variety of vehicle manufacturing has been widely used. This is inseparable from its characteristics (eg: plasticity, toughness, welding performance).

High-alloy steel has a high-quality alloy steel, special alloy steel; according to the characteristics and uses are divided into alloy structural steel, stainless steel, acid-resistant steel, wear-resistant steel, heat-resistant steel, alloy tool steel, rolling bearing steel, alloy spring steel, and special properties of the steel (eg, soft magnetic steel, permanent magnetic steel, non-magnetic steel) and so on.

Introduction Of Alloying Elements In Low Alloy Steel Plate

The most commonly used alloying elements in low alloy steels are manganese, silicon, chromium and nickel. If corrosion resistance must be improved, copper is added to the steel. Such elements (with the exception of chromium and nickel) increase the strength limit, change the plasticity slightly and reduce the impact toughness.

Low-alloy steels contain no more than 1% nickel. This element is not significant enough to strengthen the steel, but has a good effect on plasticity and impact toughness, and improves the resistance of steel to brittle damage. The amount of nickel is often limited by its scarcity.

In the case of multiple alloying, chromium increases the strength of the steel and has a good effect on low-temperature stability. In the case of low alloy steels in general (≤0.9%) chromium has no adverse effect on weldability.

Low-alloy steels are usually supplemented with 0.3% copper. At this content, copper improves corrosion resistance and results in improved strength properties. In addition, such a copper content has no adverse effect on the weldability of the steel and does not cause red brittleness.
