Corten steel plate is a series of low-alloy structural steels developed to adapt to different atmospheric environments. Its name "Corten" is derived from the combination of "Corrosion Resistance" (corrosion resistance) and "Tensile Strength" (tensile strength), which intuitively reflects its two core characteristics. The main alloying elements include copper (Cu), phosphorus (P), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni) and other components. These elements work together to form a dense protective rust layer on the surface of the steel plate, thereby achieving long-term corrosion resistance.

 

There are two main common types of Corten steel plates: Corten A and Corten B. 2.1 Initial Corrosion Stage

When Corten steel plate is first exposed to the atmospheric environment (such as air, rainwater, etc.), the surface will quickly react with oxygen and moisture to form a thin layer of loose rust. At this stage, the rust layer is not dense enough and cannot effectively prevent the internal steel from being corroded, so the surface of the steel plate will appear uneven rust color.

 

2.2 Protective Rust Layer Formation Stage

With the extension of exposure time, the alloying elements (Cu, Cr, P, etc.) in Corten steel will gradually precipitate into the rust layer. These elements react with the components in the rust layer to transform the loose rust into a dense, stable and firmly bonded oxide film (mainly composed of iron oxide hydrate). This oxide film is about 50-100 microns thick, has good compactness, and can block the contact between the internal steel matrix and the external corrosive medium (oxygen, moisture, etc.), thereby fundamentally slowing down the corrosion rate of the steel plate.

 

2.3 Stable Maintenance Stage

After the protective rust layer is fully formed, it will maintain a stable state for a long time. Under normal atmospheric conditions, the corrosion rate of Corten steel plate is only 1/5-1/10 of that of ordinary carbon steel. Even in harsh environments such as industrial areas and coastal areas, the protective rust layer can still maintain good performance, ensuring the long-term service life of the steel plate.
