What Makes Q235NH Corten Steel Special​

Q235NH Corten Steel is a kind of weathering steel that comes under the Chinese standard GB/T 4171. It's designed with an added advantage - enhanced resistance to atmospheric corrosion. This is achieved by adding small amounts of elements like copper, nickel, and others to plain carbon steel.​

When Q235NH Corten Steel is exposed to the outdoor environment, something interesting happens. Over time, it develops a unique, rust - like appearance. But this isn't the harmful rust that eats away at regular steel. Instead, this "rusty" layer, known as a patina, acts as a natural shield. It tightly adheres to the surface of the steel, preventing water and oxygen from reaching the underlying metal. This significantly slows down the corrosion process, making the steel highly durable even in harsh weather conditions. In fact, its corrosion resistance is 2 to 8 times better than that of ordinary carbon steel, and its painting performance is 1.5 to 10 times that of ordinary carbon steel.​

In addition to its corrosion resistance, Q235NH Corten Steel also offers good mechanical properties. It has a decent level of strength, which allows it to bear significant loads. For example, its yield strength of 235 MPa (the "235" in its name) indicates the amount of stress it can withstand before it starts to deform plastically. This strength, combined with its ductility, means it can be shaped and formed easily during the construction process without cracking or breaking. It also has excellent weldability, which is crucial as most industrial structures require steel components to be joined together.
