SMA400AW is a weather-resistant structural steel grade covered by the Japanese standard JIS G3114. It belongs to the same family as the well-known "corten" or "atmospheric corrosion-resistant" steels that are intentionally designed for outdoor use without depending on paint or repeated coating work. Unlike ordinary carbon steel that continues to rust and flake with every new rainy season, SMA400AW reacts with the environment in a controlled way so that a compact, adherent oxide layer forms on the surface. That oxide layer - often called a patina or weathered skin - becomes the steel's own protective barrier.

 

The mechanism behind this self-protection is chemical, not cosmetic. SMA400AW contains small but carefully controlled percentages of copper, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus in addition to iron. These alloying elements transform the corrosion behavior. Instead of producing a loose rust scale that tears away and re-exposes fresh metal, the oxide film in SMA400AW tends to densify and bond tightly to the substrate. After a steady exposure to alternating wet and dry cycles with oxygen, the patina stops the rusting from progressing deeper.
