SMA490CW is a weather-resistant structural steel defined in the Japanese industrial standard JIS G3114. It is designed for outdoor use, especially in situations where ordinary carbon steel would rust aggressively and would need paint, coating, or regular maintenance. Unlike conventional steel that rusts in a loose and flaky manner, SMA490CW reacts to the atmosphere by building up a slow-growing, compact oxide layer that sticks to the surface. This stable oxide "skin" blocks moisture and oxygen from penetrating deeper, slowing further corrosion without external coating.

The corrosion behavior of SMA490CW comes from its intentional chemistry. Small additions of alloying elements like copper, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus help generate a dense, well-adhered rust patina instead of crumbly rust dust. Over time, the surface transforms to a visually uniform brown-orange protective film.
