JIS SPA-H Weathering Steel

 

 

 

 

JIS SPA-H is a high-strength weathering steel specified in JIS G3125. It is widely used when a structure must stand outdoors for many years and face wind, rain, humidity, and temperature changes without relying on constant repainting. Unlike ordinary mild steel, SPA-H is engineered to form a dense protective patina on its surface when exposed to the atmosphere. This patina acts like a natural shield and slows down further corrosion, giving the material a much longer service life.

 

The reason SPA-H can do what normal steel cannot is its chemistry. Copper, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus are added in controlled amounts. These alloying elements make the surface rust layer more compact and adherent, so it does not flake off like common rust does.
