S690QL1 High Tensile Alloy Steel Sheet is quenched & tempered fine-grain structural steel to EN 10025-6. As the upgraded variant of S690Q and S690QL, it delivers minimum 690MPa yield strength, reliable weldability and guaranteed -60°C impact toughness.

Forming of S690QL1 HSLA steel
Bending and forming is possible using suitably powerful equipment. When bending transversal to the rolling direction it is recommended to form to a maximum of 2 x thickness. For longitudunal to the rolling direction a maximum of 3 x thickness is recommended. S690QL1 steel plate is not ideally suited for hot forming over 600°C. Forming at over this temperature can have an effect on the mechanical properties of the steel and re hardening and tempering may be required.
Welding of S690QL1 high strength steel
Two matching strategies are adopted in global engineering projects:
Equal strength matching: Low hydrogen filler metal with minimum yield strength 690 MPa (primary option).
Undermatching: 620 MPa grade consumables for low-temperature dynamic structures to reduce residual stress. Avoid ordinary carbon steel welding rods.
Preheat & Interpass Temperature
Plate ≤12 mm: Min. preheat 50 ℃, max interpass 200 ℃
12–25 mm: Min. preheat 100 ℃, max interpass 200 ℃
25–50 mm: Min. preheat 125 ℃, max interpass 200 ℃
Over 50mm / highly restrained joints: Min. preheat 150 ℃ Increase preheat temperature by 25~50 ℃ under cold weather or damp working conditions.
Recommended Welding Processes
SMAW: E8515-G / E8516-G low hydrogen electrodes (bake at 350–400℃)
MAG / GMAW: ER85S-G wire, shielding gas: 80% Ar +20% CO₂
SAW: Low-hydrogen agglomerated flux, fully dried before use. Controlled heat input: 0.6 ~ 1.8 kJ/mm
Post-Weld Treatment
Post weld heat treatment (PWHT) between 500~650℃ is forbidden, as it will degrade base metal strength and low-temperature toughness. For thick and highly constrained welds: Hold 200–250 ℃ for 2–4 hours for hydrogen removal, then cool down slowly.
