Alloy 20, also known as Carpenter 20, is a nickel-iron-chromium austenitic alloy developed for maximum resistance to acid attack, particularly sulfuric acid. In chemical media such as chloride, phosphoric acid, and nitric acid, the alloy has good resistance to complete corrosion, pitting corrosion, and crack corrosion. In addition, the alloy contains niobium, which is stable against sensitization and intergranular corrosion. Alloy 20 contains 33% nickel and shows some resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking. This material is commonly used to solve the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) problem in 316 L stainless steel.
