EH40 grade hull plate is a hot rolled high tensile strength steel. High-strength ABS shipbuilding steel is available in 12 grades in 3 strengths, and EH40 is one of them. ABS EH40 offshore steel plate for shipbuilding has a yield strength of 56,500 psi (390 MPa) and an ultimate tensile strength of 74,000 - 94,500 psi (510-650 MPa). All ABS EH40 weldable structural steel plate is engineered to be the best long life shipbuilding steel. This steel plate is used for ship hull structure and has good toughness, high strength, strong corrosion resistance, processing performance and welding performance. This steel can be used to manufacture the hull structure of ocean-going ships weighing more than 10,000.

With the highest tensile strength among common shipbuilding steels, ABS EH40 shipbuilding mild steel plates are often used to build ships that sail in harsh environments, such as the coldest seawater and harsh conditions. Icebreakers are the primary end application for ABS EH40 grade marine steel plates. ABS EH40 Bulb flat steel for shipbuilding can withstand tough ice and cryogenic seawater as it must be impact tested at -40 degrees Celsius while rolling.
