GB/T Q235NH Weathering Steel

GB/T Q235NH Weathering Steel is a commonly used low-alloy structural steel developed under the Chinese standard GB/T 4171. It belongs to the family of weathering steels, sometimes also referred to as atmospheric corrosion-resistant steel or popularly known as Corten-type steel. Compared to ordinary carbon steel, Q235NH is engineered to deliver better durability and rust protection in outdoor environments, while keeping the cost and mechanical properties close to standard grades like Q235B. This makes it one of the most economical and practical weathering steel options for a wide range of construction, architectural, and industrial projects.

What makes Q235NH "weathering" steel is not a paint or coating, but the steel's own chemistry. Small amounts of Cu, Cr, Ni and P are added to promote the formation of a stable oxidation film - often called a patina layer - once the steel is exposed to natural weather. Instead of rust flaking and spreading like in ordinary steel, this patina adheres tightly and slows down further corrosion. Over time, the formed layer becomes more uniform and dense, providing long-term shield-like protection without constant repainting or chemical treatment.
