GB/T Q460NH weathering steel is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel developed for use in outdoor conditions where conventional mild steel would rust quickly and require frequent repainting. It belongs to the Chinese GB/T standard family of atmospheric corrosion-resistant steels and combines two important features in one material: (1) strength at the 460 MPa yield level, and (2) the ability to build up a stable protective patina when exposed to the natural environment. These characteristics make Q460NH attractive for infrastructure, large-span engineering, and long-life outdoor works where maintenance access is difficult or costly.

Unlike ordinary carbon steel, Q460NH includes carefully controlled amounts of alloying elements such as copper, nickel, chromium, and phosphorus. These elements change the chemistry of the rusting process. On normal steel, rust is flaky and porous; oxygen and moisture can pass through it, so corrosion keeps progressing. On weathering steel, after a period of alternating wetting and drying in the open air, the rust layer transforms into a dense, well-adhered dark brown film. This film - often called a "patina" - slows further corrosion to a very low rate, allowing the steel to reach decades of service without continuous repainting or coating.
