What Is A242 Type 1 Weathering Steel Plate
ASTM A242/A242M covers high-strength low-alloy structural steel plates with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance. Grade A242 Type 1, normally ordered as weathering steel, is a copper-bearing low-alloy plate that develops a dense and tightly adherent oxide layer on its surface once it is exposed to alternating wet and dry conditions. That patina slows further attack, so the plate can often be left unpainted on exposed structures and needs far less maintenance than ordinary carbon steel.
The grade keeps the strength, weldability and formability of a structural steel while offering several times the atmospheric corrosion resistance of plain carbon steel in a suitable environment.
Chemical Composition and Mechanical Properties
Typical ladle analysis limits are listed below. Copper is the essential alloying addition; chromium, nickel and silicon are added within the specification to reach the required corrosion performance.
| Element | Limit, % | Function |
|---|---|---|
| C | 0.15 max | Balances strength and weldability |
| Mn | 1.00 max | Strength and deoxidation |
| P | 0.15 max | Contributes to atmospheric corrosion resistance |
| S | 0.05 max | Kept low for cleanliness and toughness |
| Cu | 0.20 min | Principal corrosion-resistance element |
| Cr, Ni, Si | Not individually specified | Added as needed to satisfy the corrosion requirement |
Mechanical properties
Minimum values for plate thickness up to 20 mm are shown below. The specification sets progressively lower minimums for heavier plate, so these figures must always be read together with the thickness that is ordered.
| Property | Minimum value |
|---|---|
| Yield point | 345 MPa |
| Tensile strength | 480 MPa |
| Elongation | 18 % |
| Corrosion performance | Substantially better than carbon steel in an alternating wet and dry atmosphere |

Packing: waterproof paper and steel strapping on sea-worthy wooden supports
Grades Used for the Same Duty
Weathering products defined by other standards are frequently supplied for the same applications. They are not automatically interchangeable, because chemistry, impact requirements and permitted thickness differ from standard to standard.

Fabrication, Welding and Detailing
Welding: shielded metal arc, gas metal arc and submerged arc processes are all used; low-hydrogen consumables matched to the base metal strength are recommended, and procedures should be qualified for the thickness in production.
Bolting and riveting: the grade suits bolted and riveted connections, which avoid welding heat input altogether.
Forming: cold bending, punching and flame cutting are routine; cut edges should be dressed free of slag and heavy scale before service or painting.
Detailing: provide drainage and avoid pockets where water, salt or debris can collect. Unpainted weathering steel should not be used in continuously wet, chloride-rich or immersion service.
Coating: where a structure is painted for appearance, the patina still forms at coating breaks and limits undercutting of the coating.
FAQ
Q: Is A242 Type 1 the same as A588 Grade A?
Both are copper-bearing weathering steels with a 345 MPa minimum yield point, but they are separate ASTM specifications with different chemistry limits and thickness rules, so one may not be substituted for the other without engineering approval.
Q: Can A242 plate be used without paint?
Yes. In environments with alternating wet and dry cycles and low chloride levels the plate forms a stable patina and is normally left bare. Painting is used mainly where appearance or severe exposure demands it.
Q: What thickness is A242 Type 1 available in?
Production is typically quoted from 2 mm to 100 mm, with the minimum mechanical values falling as thickness increases.
Q: Is weathering steel suitable for marine or coastal structures?
Not for immersion or heavy salt spray. In coastal atmospheres the protective layer is less stable, so the steel is normally painted or protected, or a higher-alloy grade is selected instead.
Q: How should A242 plate be welded?
Use low-hydrogen consumables matched to the base metal strength, keep heat input inside the qualified range, and qualify the welding procedure for the thickness and joint design used in production.
Q: Why is edge preparation important on weathering steel?
Cut edges are where patina formation and moisture retention begin, so slag, loose scale and laminations should be removed before the member goes into service.
