ABS DH32 Shipbuilding Steel Plate: Spec, Properties and Supply

What Is DH32 Marine Steel Plate?

DH32 Marine Steel PlateDH32 is a high-strength hull structural steel grade recognized by major international classification societies - e.g., ABS, BV, CCS, ClassNK, DNV, KR and LR - with grade designation and property requirements harmonized under IACS W11 (Rec. No. 11, Application of Shipbuilding Steels).

It is specially engineered for ship hull fabrication and marine structural parts where valid class society certification is a mandatory delivery condition. It is widely adopted in commercial vessel construction, ship repair and class-approved secondary offshore structures.

Cross-standard reference: DH32 corresponds to ASTM A131/A131M Grade DH32 and to GB/T 712-2022 DH32 (Ships and Marine Engineering Structural Steel). No identical designation exists in the EN 10025 series; where EN is referenced, properties are commonly aligned with S355N-class steels under the applicable class rules.

Grade Designation Explanation

  • D - Temperature grade: requires Charpy V-notch impact testing at −20 °C to ensure adequate toughness for general hull service conditions. For lower-temperature or ice-class service, grades E (−40 °C) or F (−60 °C) are normally required.
  • H - High Strength: distinguishes high-strength shipbuilding steel from ordinary-strength grades (A, B, D, E).
  • 32 - Strength class: minimum yield strength of 315 MPa (≈ 32 kgf/mm²; 1 kgf/mm² ≈ 9.81 MPa), also traditionally referred to as the "32 kgf/mm²" grade.

Guaranteed Mechanical Properties

(Per IACS W11 & applicable classification society rules; values subject to plate thickness and rule edition.)

Property

Standard Requirement

Minimum Yield Strength

≥ 315 MPa

Tensile Strength

440–590 MPa

Minimum Elongation

≥ 22%

Charpy V-Notch Impact Test

−20 °C; average of three longitudinal specimens ≥ 31 J, minimum individual value ≥ 22 J (full-size specimens; sub-size specimens with proportional values apply to thin plates per class rules)

Chemical Composition & Weldability

DH32 follows strict chemical composition limits for carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus and sulfur stipulated by the classification societies (typical: C ≤ 0.18%, Mn 0.90–1.60%, Si ≤ 0.50%, P ≤ 0.035%, S ≤ 0.035%; verify against the applicable rule edition). Microalloying elements - niobium, vanadium or titanium - may be added for grain refinement within the limits specified by class rules, and actual contents are declared in the mill test certificate (MTC).

Carbon equivalent (CEV) is controlled within class-rule limits (typically ≤ 0.40%) to ensure good weldability. For typical plate thicknesses, preheating is generally not required; minimum preheat and interpass temperatures shall follow the qualified welding procedure specification (WPS) based on grade, thickness and CEV.

Production Route & Certification Requirements

Grade DH32 plates are supplied in normalizing (N) or thermo-mechanical controlled processing (TMCP / controlled rolling) condition as required by the applicable class rules; as-rolled delivery is generally not permitted for Grade D steels. Common thickness range: 6–80 mm, with optional Z-direction properties (Z25 / Z35) available on request.

All supplied DH32 plates must be accompanied by official classification society certification (Class Certificate / CoC), and third-party independent inspection (e.g., SGS or BV witnessing) is available upon purchaser's request. Mill test certificates trace each heat and plate number for full material traceability.

Typical Applications

Primary usage covers ship main hull structures - weather decks, inner decks, transverse and longitudinal bulkheads, shell plates and other critical hull components requiring class approval.

It is also frequently specified for class-approved secondary / non-critical offshore structures, marine barges, pontoons and ship repair projects where Grade DH32 is designated in the technical specification. For primary load-bearing offshore members, higher strength grades (e.g., EH36 / EH40 or dedicated offshore grades) shall be considered.

Purchaser Supplementary Notes

DH32 is one of the most mainstream high-strength ship plate grades. When placing orders, buyers should clarify in advance: target classification society endorsement, delivery surface condition, dimensional tolerances, edge condition (mill edge or trimmed edge) / cutting allowances, and inspection scope. Thickness-related impact test adjustments, delivery heat treatment condition and additional non-destructive testing (UT) shall be clearly stated in purchase contracts to avoid delivery discrepancies.
