FAQ

Is corten steel expensive?

Corten steel is more expensive due to the materials used and the specialized production process. Traditional steel rusts and is therefore a less suitable choice for outdoor applications. Polyester is cheaper than corten steel, but does not withstand temperature changes as well and can become porous over time.

How long will corten steel last?

Generally, Corten steel will patina or rust within six months of atmospheric exposure. Most weathering steel types need wet/dry weather cycles to develop and oxidize. With the protective rust that provides corrosion resistance, Corten steel can last upwards of a few decades to over 100 years.

What are the negatives of corten steel?

While Corten steel may be visually appealing, its unstable ferro-oxyhydroxide layer, susceptibility to rust and corrosion, limited lifespan, and contamination risks make it an unreliable choice for architectural applications.

Does corten steel keep rusting?

To form this protective patina, corten steel needs repeated cycles of wetting and drying. If buried or otherwise prevented from experiencing these cycles, corten steel will not develop the patina and will rust at a similar rate to mild steel.

Is corten steel toxic to humans?

No, Corten Steel is not toxic. These environment-friendly materials are completely safe for humans, animals, and plants.
