General principles for selecting steel plates for pressure vessels

For design and manufacturing engineering technicians, the reasonable selection and application of materials is the responsibility of each engineer. The selection of pressure vessel materials should comprehensively consider the mechanical properties, chemical properties, physical properties and process properties of the material, as well as the use environment of the pressure vessel, such as design pressure, design temperature, medium characteristics, welding performance of the material, inspection and testing, heat treatment and economy. rationality, etc. The general principles for selecting pressure vessel steel plates are as follows:

1. In situations where stiffness and structural design are the main focus, ordinary carbon steel should be chosen as much as possible. In situations where strength design is the main focus, steel materials such as Q235B, Q245R, and Q345R should be selected in order according to usage restrictions such as pressure, temperature, and medium.

2. When the thickness of the pressure vessel steel plate is less than 8mm, carbon steel should be selected between carbon steel and low alloy steel.

3. When the thickness of stainless steel is greater than 12mm, structural forms such as stainless steel lining, composite, and surfacing should be used.

4. Stainless steel should not be used as heat-resistant steel with a design temperature of less than or equal to 500°C.
