FAQ
Is Corten the same as A588?
ASTM A588 is also referred to as Corten® and covers structural shapes, plate, and bar. This alloy is made up of copper, chromium, nickel, and other elements that give it its weathering resistance properties.
What is A588 steel equivalent to?
The ASTM A588 grade A plate is equivalent to Corten A steel plate. ASTM A242 plate is equivalent to Corten B. Compared with common low alloy high strength steel such as A572 Grade 50, ASTM A588 and ASTM A242 has advantages of weathering resistant performances.
What is A588 steel used for?
ASTM A588, in particular, is intended for use in applications where savings in weight, added durability and extended life cycle are paramount, such as welded bridges and buildings. ASTM A588 is commonly used to construct pedestrian bridges, highway bridge girders, ships, tanks, railcars, fencing and sculptures.
Why is corten steel so expensive?
Corten steel is more expensive due to the materials used and the specialized production process. Traditional steel rusts and is therefore a less suitable choice for outdoor applications. Polyester is cheaper than corten steel, but does not withstand temperature changes as well and can become porous over time.
What is the difference between Grade A and B in A588?
Differences Noted: Grade B allows slightly higher manganese. Grade A allows higher silicon content, possibly influencing weldability. Both grades contain alloying elements like Cu, Cr, and Ni for atmospheric corrosion resistance.
