Hot Rolled S355j2wp 09cup ASTM A588 Corten Steel Plate

Products Description

S355J2WP steel is a structural steel grade that is hot rolled in technical shipping conditions and has increased atmospheric corrosion resistance. The primary alloying elements are chromium, nickel, and copper, with phosphorus added for added self-protective properties. If the steel reacts with elements in the environment, a coat of rust forms over time, thereby protecting the steel from corrosion.

A588 corten steel plate is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel known for its excellent corrosion resistance and distinctive reddish-brown, self-healing oxide patina that forms on its surface. This "weathering steel" is commonly used in unpainted applications like bridges, buildings, guardrails, and outdoor structures, as its natural patina reduces the need for coatings and lowers maintenance costs. A588 is available in various grades (A, B, K), is suitable for welded, riveted, or bolted construction, and is a trade name equivalent to ASTM A588.

FAQ

Is A588 the same as Corten?

A588 is a type of weathering steel that's renowned for its exceptional corrosion resistance. With its unique ability to form a protective rust-like surface, it eliminates the need for additional coatings, reducing maintenance costs. ASTM A588 is also referred to as Corten® and covers structural shapes, plate, and bar.

What is A588 steel used for?

ASTM A588, in particular, is intended for use in applications where savings in weight, added durability and extended life cycle are paramount, such as welded bridges and buildings. ASTM A588 is commonly used to construct pedestrian bridges, highway bridge girders, ships, tanks, railcars, fencing and sculptures.

What is A588 material equivalent to?

The ASTM A588 grade A plate is equivalent to Corten A steel plate. ASTM A242 plate is equivalent to Corten B. Compared with common low alloy high strength steel such as A572 Grade 50, ASTM A588 and ASTM A242 has advantages of weathering resistant performances.

What is the difference between A588 and A242?

A242 (Corten A): Specifies a minimum tensile strength of 63 ksi (435 MPa) for Grades 1 & 3, and 70 ksi (485 MPa) for Grade K (a newer, stronger variant). A588 (Corten B): Specifies a minimum tensile strength of 70 ksi (485 MPa) for all grades. This is the most significant mechanical difference.

Why is Corten steel so expensive?

One of the most practical considerations when choosing between Corten and mild steel is cost. Corten steel is more expensive than mild steel due to its unique composition and the additional processing required to create its weather-resistant properties.
