How to Specify SA516 GR60N HIC Pressure Vessel Steel Plate

Why SA516 GR60N HIC Matters for Sour Service Pressure Vessels

Pressure vessels operating in wet H2S environments face a hidden enemy: hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC). Unlike general corrosion that you can see and measure, HIC initiates subsurface - along elongated manganese sulfide inclusions - and can propagate through the plate thickness without any visible sign on the surface. By the time cracking is detected during inspection, the vessel may already be at risk of catastrophic failure.

SA516 GR60N HIC is a normalized carbon-manganese steel plate specifically produced and tested to resist hydrogen-induced cracking in sour service. It combines the proven weldability and notch toughness of standard A516 Grade 60 with tightly controlled steelmaking practices - ultra-low sulfur, calcium treatment, and fine-grained microstructure - that give it demonstrable HIC resistance verified through NACE TM0284 testing.

How to Specify SA516 GR60N HIC Plate

Writing a clear, complete specification is the single most important step in ensuring you receive material that performs as expected in sour service. A vague specification - "A516 Grade 60, HIC resistant" - leaves too much room for interpretation and non-compliant substitutions.

Recommended full specification

ASTM A516 / A516M, Grade 60, Normalized, Supplementary Requirement S1 (HIC Test per NACE TM0284 Solution A), Acceptance Criteria: CSR ≤ 2%, CLR ≤ 15%, CTR ≤ 5%, NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliant, maximum hardness 22 HRC

What each part of the specification means

1. Base standard and grade

Always state the full standard designation including the year of the specific edition you require. Different editions may have different requirements, and the mill must certify to the exact version referenced.

2. Supply condition

Specify "Normalized" for the N condition. Do not assume normalization - some suppliers may offer as-rolled material at a lower price. Normalization is essential for the grain refinement and toughness that HIC-resistant grades rely on.

3. HIC supplementary requirement

Explicitly invoke Supplementary Requirement S1 of ASTM A516, which covers HIC testing per NACE TM0284. Without this, you have no contractual basis for HIC performance.

4. Test solution and duration

Specify NACE TM0284 Solution A as the test solution. Solution A is the standard for most oil and gas applications. Also confirm the test duration is 96 hours at ambient temperature and pressure.

5. Acceptance criteria

This is where many specifications fall short. You must define the maximum allowable crack ratios:

  • CSR (Crack Sensitivity Ratio): Total crack area / total section area ≤ 2%
  • CLR (Crack Length Ratio): Sum of crack lengths / section length ≤ 15%
  • CTR (Crack Thickness Ratio): Sum of crack thicknesses / section thickness ≤ 5%

These are the most commonly specified acceptance limits for sour service. For severe service conditions, tighter limits (e.g., CSR ≤ 1%, CLR ≤ 10%) may be warranted.

6. NACE compliance and hardness

If the vessel is for NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 service, state this explicitly. Include the maximum hardness requirement (typically 22 HRC for base metal in sour service).

Optional supplementary requirements

Depending on your project, you may also want to specify: S3 (Vacuum Treatment), S5 (Charpy Impact Test), S7 (Simulated Post-Weld Heat Treatment), S8 (Ultrasonic Examination), and S12 (Magnetic Particle Inspection of Plate Surfaces). Each adds cost but may be required for critical service.

Procurement the Right Material: Verification Checklist

Use this checklist when evaluating quotations and reviewing mill test certificates for SA516 GR60N HIC plate. Each item is a potential point of non-compliance that could lead to premature vessel failure.

  • Base standard: ASTM A516 / A516M with specific edition year stated on the MTC
  • Grade: Explicitly Grade 60, not a different grade substituted as "equivalent"
  • Supply condition: Normalized - verify with documented normalizing practice records
  • Sulfur content: ≤ 0.002% on the heat analysis - a must for genuine HIC resistance
  • Phosphorus content: ≤ 0.008% on the heat analysis
  • Calcium treatment: Confirmed on the steelmaking practice sheet (for sulfide shape control)
  • HIC test standard: NACE TM0284, with year of standard edition stated
  • Test solution: Solution A (acidified brine) - the most severe and most common
  • Test duration: 96 hours at ambient temperature and pressure
  • CSR result: ≤ 2% (or your project's specified limit)
  • CLR result: ≤ 15% (or your project's specified limit)
  • CTR result: ≤ 5% (or your project's specified limit)
  • Hardness: Maximum 22 HRC base metal (for NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156)
  • Carbon equivalent: ≤ 0.39% for Grade 60 HIC material
  • Traceability: Heat number on MTC matches plate stamping and shipping documents
  • Test location: HIC test specimens taken from the actual plate (not just a representative heat)

Pro tip: Always review the HIC test report

Don't just check the pass/fail box on the MTC. Ask for the full HIC test report showing the actual CSR, CLR, and CTR values for each section examined. A plate that barely passes (e.g., CSR = 1.9%) has less safety margin than one with CSR well below 1%. Understanding the actual values helps you assess real-world performance risk.

ocumentation & Mill Test Certificate Requirements

A proper mill test certificate (MTC), also called a material test report, is your legal proof that the material meets specification. For HIC plate, the MTC must include more than just the standard chemistry and tension test results.

What to look for on the MTC

Full standard designation - including edition year and all supplementary requirements

Heat number - traceable to each plate

Plate dimensions - thickness, width, length, and quantity

Chemical composition - full heat analysis with all elements, not just C, Mn, Si, P, S

Tensile test results - yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation values

Normalizing practice - temperature and time records or a statement confirming normalization

HIC test report - attached to or referenced on the MTC, with:

  • Test standard and solution used
  • Test duration and temperature
  • Individual CSR, CLR, and CTR values for each specimen
  • Statement of pass/fail against the specified acceptance criteria

Hardness test results - when NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance is specified

Mill certification statement - signed by the mill's authorized representative

EN 10204 certificate type

If your project requires EN 10204 certification, specify Type 3.1 (mill's own inspection department) or Type 3.2 (independent third-party inspection). For critical sour service applications, a 3.2 certificate provides an additional level of assurance.
