FAQ
What is the difference between Grade A and Grade B A588?
Choose Grade A if the design prioritizes weldability and higher silicon content is acceptable. Choose Grade B for slightly thicker sections or when higher manganese content might improve formability or impact toughness.
Why is it called corten steel?
The name Corten is a shortening of Corrosion – Tensile, as the material has good corrosion resistance and tensile strength. This trademark name is officially written COR-TEN, however, and you may also hear it called weathering steel.
Can A588 be galvanized?
Can weathering steel (e.g. ASTM A588, A709 Weathering, COR-TEN) be galvanized? Weathering steel can be galvanized successfully and is considered for applications such as bridges, transmission towers, lamp standards, and pole-line hardware.
What's special about corten steel?
Corten Steel is also known as a 'weathering steel', as the steel forms a protective layer on its surface under the influence of the weather; and it is this protective layer that gives Corten far superior resistance to atmospheric corrosion, compared to other steels.
What is an alternative to corten steel?
Mild Steel does not form a protective layer but aesthetically is very similar to Corten Steel. Corten starts to develop its trademark Patina quicker than Mild Steel. Mild Steel is a more cost-effective alternative to Corten for those budget-conscious gardeners.
