Q: How long will 2mm Corten steel last?
A: Most building codes requires that roofing and cladding have a minimum 15 years resistance to water penetration. In conclusion 2mm thick corten weathering steel in moderate urban environments should be approx 1mm thick after 50yrs weathering from both sides.
Q: Will a magnet stick to Corten steel?
A: Yes, but magnets can only stick to steel if the steel has been magnetized. Unmagnetized steel does not have a strong magnetic field and will not be attracted to a magnet.
Q: How to tell if steel is corten?
A: Corten Steel undergoes a gradual weathering process so that you may notice signs of ageing, such as rust accumulation and colour changes over time. These visual cues indicate that the steel is indeed Corten and not a standard steel with surface rust.
Q: Is Corten steel cheaper than stainless steel?
A: Initial Cost: Since stainless steel is prized for its superior quality, its initial cost is more than that of corten steel. The cost disparity may have a big role, particularly in large-scale projects or those with limited funding.
Q: Is corten steel compatible with stainless steel?
A: In general do NOT use dissimilar metals with COR-TEN®. Galvanized, Galvalume®, and zinc should NOT come into contact with COR-TEN®. Stainless steel is compatible with COR-TEN®.
