Products Description
Corten steel is a type of weathering steel often used in outdoor applications. While Corten and weathering steels are often interchangeable, COR-TEN® is a branded, trademarked, proprietary steel. COR reflects corrosion resistance, and TEN reflects tensile strength. Due to its name recognition, weathering steels are often called Corten steel. There are ASTM also specifications that reflect equivalent Corten types.

FAQ
What is corten steel made of?
Corten steel, often known as weathering steel, is a steel alloy recognised for its distinctive worn look and high durability. It is mostly made of iron, with trace quantities of copper, chromium, and nickel added to improve its weathering qualities.
Who invented corten steel?
The original weathering steel was developed and patented in 1933 by U.S. Steel under the brand name Cor-Ten®, deriving it's name from 'CORrosion Resistance' and 'TENsile Strength'.
Why is Corten steel so expensive?
One of the most practical considerations when choosing between Corten and mild steel is cost. Corten steel is more expensive than mild steel due to its unique composition and the additional processing required to create its weather-resistant properties.
How long will Corten steel last?
Generally, Corten steel will patina or rust within six months of atmospheric exposure. Most weathering steel types need wet/dry weather cycles to develop and oxidize. With the protective rust that provides corrosion resistance, Corten steel can last upwards of a few decades to over 100 years.
How can you tell if steel is Corten?
Corten steel develops a beautiful orange patina in the early days before darkening to an orange-brown hue, providing a uniquely appealing, rustic finish. Mild steel, on the other hand, tends to develop a darker orange-brown finish right from the start.
