S500MC Structural Steel Plate: High Strength Steel for Cold Forming

What Is S500MC Structural Steel?

S500MC is a hot-rolled, micro-alloyed high-strength steel plate produced to EN 10149-2 and intended above all for cold forming. It delivers a minimum yield strength of 500 MPa with a tensile range of 550 to 700 MPa, so components can be designed thinner and lighter while still meeting the load cases of vehicle and machine structures. Because the grade is thermomechanically rolled rather than quenched and tempered, it keeps the ductility and bendability that press shops, laser cutters and fabricators need.

Its main fields of use are automobile frame rails, longitudinal beams and cross members, structural parts of engineering machinery such as excavators, loaders and cranes, and load-bearing elements in building structures.

Chemical Composition to EN 10149-2

The strength of S500MC comes from micro-alloying and from controlled rolling rather than from a high carbon content. That is why the carbon, sulphur and phosphorus limits are deliberately low, which also keeps the steel weldable and formable.

Element Maximum or minimum (%)
C ≤ 0.12
Si ≤ 0.50
Mn ≤ 1.70
P ≤ 0.025
S ≤ 0.015
Alt (total aluminium) ≥ 0.015
Nb ≤ 0.09
V ≤ 0.20
Ti ≤ 0.15

Niobium, vanadium and titanium are the grain-refining and precipitation-hardening additions: they raise yield strength without the loss of toughness that a high carbon level would cause. Aluminium is kept above the minimum so that the steel is fully deoxidised and the grain structure stays fine.

Mechanical Properties and Thickness Bands

Property Value
Tensile strength 550–700 MPa
Minimum yield strength ≥ 500 MPa
Minimum elongation, thickness < 3.0 mm ≥ 12 %
Minimum elongation, thickness ≥ 3.0 mm ≥ 14 %
Delivery condition Thermomechanically rolled (other conditions on agreement)
Typical uses Cold-formed structural components for vehicles, machinery and buildings

The thickness split in the elongation requirement reflects how the grade behaves: thin material used in roll forming and press work needs a guaranteed ductility level, while thicker plate has a slightly higher elongation minimum because the strain path during forming is less severe. Both values are minimum requirements of the delivery specification, so the actual elongation on a mill certificate is normally higher.

Delivery Condition: Thermomechanical Rolling

S500MC is supplied in the thermomechanically rolled condition. This means the final deformation is carried out in a controlled temperature window and is followed by accelerated cooling rather than by reheating or quenching. The fine, uniform grain structure that results is what produces the combination of high yield strength and good impact toughness without a separate heat treatment step.

Consistent through-thickness properties, because no hardening treatment is involved

Good surface quality and dimensional tolerance, suitable for automated press and roll-forming lines

Lower energy consumption in production than quenched and tempered grades, since no reheat furnace cycle is needed

Dimensions and lengths cut to project requirements for downstream fabrication

Because EN 10149-2 is written for hot-rolled flat products intended for cold forming, the MC series is a thin-to-medium gauge product family. Structural components that need heavy plate sections are normally specified under the structural steel standards of the EN 10025 series, where thickness-related property tables are defined for thick material.

Cold Forming, Welding and Applications

The grade is designed to be cut, bent and punched. Shearing, laser and plasma cutting, press braking and roll forming are all standard operations, and the low carbon and low sulphur levels reduce the risk of edge cracking during cold forming. Because yield strength is high and elongation is still guaranteed, springback is greater than with a mild steel; tooling and bend radii are therefore set up from the actual 500 MPa property level rather than from handbook values for softer grades.

S500MC can be joined by arc welding, gas welding and laser welding. The main precaution with a micro-alloyed thermomechanically rolled steel is to avoid excessive heat input, because an unnecessarily wide heat-affected zone can soften the grain-refined structure and reduce strength in the joint area. Moderate heat input, correctly matched consumables and clean joints keep the weld strength and toughness close to those of the parent plate.

Automotive structures: frame rails, longitudinal beams, cross beams

Engineering machinery: excavators, loaders, cranes and their attachment structures

Building structures: high-rise and bridge components used as load-bearing or supporting members

General fabrication where a light, strong cold-formed section replaces a heavier mild steel part

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is S500MC steel plate?
S500MC is a hot-rolled micro-alloyed high-strength steel plate made to EN 10149-2 with a minimum yield strength of 500 MPa and a tensile strength of 550 to 700 MPa, delivered in the thermomechanically rolled condition for cold-forming applications.

Q: What is the difference between S500MC and S355MC?
Both are thermomechanically rolled cold-forming grades of the EN 10149-2 series, but S500MC is specified at a minimum yield strength of 500 MPa instead of 355 MPa, so it allows thinner sections and lower component weight at the same load.

Q: What is the chemical composition of S500MC?
Carbon is limited to 0.12 %, silicon to 0.50 %, manganese to 1.70 %, phosphorus to 0.025 % and sulphur to 0.015 %, with total aluminium at 0.015 % minimum and micro-alloying additions of niobium up to 0.09 %, vanadium up to 0.20 % and titanium up to 0.15 %.

Q: What is the elongation of S500MC?
The minimum elongation is 12 % for thickness below 3.0 mm and 14 % for thickness of 3.0 mm and above, which is sufficient for press braking, roll forming and other cold-forming operations.

Q: How is S500MC welded?
Arc welding, gas welding and laser welding are all suitable. Heat input should be kept moderate because the thermomechanically rolled structure can soften in an oversized heat-affected zone, and the consumables should be matched to the strength of the parent plate.

Q: What is S500MC used for?
Typical applications are automotive frame rails, longitudinal and cross beams, structural parts of excavators, loaders and cranes, and load-bearing members in high-rise and bridge structures.
