S890QL | Structural Steel

S890QL is a structural steel grade with an even greater yield strength than S690QL. The material serves as a great option for procurers who wish to promote high strength in a cost effective way. Due to the characteristics of the steel, clients can use this material in numerous applications resulting in a leaner build whilst still maintaining great strength.S890QL is a water quenched & tempered steel which complies with the EN10025:6:2004 specification.

S890QL High Strength Structural Steel

Overview and Classification

S890QL is a quenched and tempered (QT), weldable, fine-grained special steel known for its mammoth strength and versatility. It is manufactured in strict compliance with the EN 10025-6:2004 standard. This steel grade is more than three times as strong as basic S275 structural steel, yet it remains relatively easy to weld and fabricate.

The alphanumeric code for S890QL is defined as follows:

S: Denotes Structural steel.

890: Represents the minimum yield strength of 890 MPa (N/mm²).

Q: Refers to the delivery condition (Quenched).

L: Indicates the average minimum value for impact energy is defined at temperatures as low as -40°C.

Material Characteristics and Performance

Heat Treatment: The plates are heat-treated using specialized quenching and tempering techniques to achieve high yield strength.

Alloying: The specific alloying agents used in S890QL bolster the vigor of each plate, allowing for maximum efficiency in high-stress designs.

Fabrication: Displays excellent bending properties and good weldability according to common welding methods (EURONORM-INFORMATION No. 2 should be considered).

Forming: Hot forming is allowed only at stress-relief annealing temperatures (maximum 580°C) to protect the material's tempered properties.

Surface Treatment: Suitability for hot-dip coating is arrangeable upon order.

Primary Applications

S890QL High Strength Steel Plates are essential in industries where high stress and weight reduction are critical factors:

Lifting and Earthmoving: Cranes, lifting equipment, and earthmoving machines.

Heavy Transportation: Transport vehicles and load-carrying constructions.

Infrastructure: Welded steel constructions of various types, including bridges.

Industrial Benefits: The high strength-to-weight ratio helps accelerate construction speeds and harness maximum profit by reducing material volume.

1What is S890QL ?

S890QL is an extra high-strength structural steel that meets European standard EN 10025-6:2004 (material number 1.8983) and is known for its exceptional strength (minimum yield strength of 890 MPa) and toughness, achieved through a quenching and tempering heat treatment, making it ideal for heavy-duty, load-bearing applications like cranes, bridges, and heavy transport, where it allows for lighter designs without compromising performance.

2What are the primary advantages of S890QL ?

The primary advantages of S890QL steel are its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, enabling significant weight savings and higher payloads in structures, combined with excellent toughness and good weldability, making it ideal for demanding applications like cranes, heavy machinery, and bridges, allowing for leaner designs while maintaining performance under extreme conditions, including low temperatures.

3What precautions should be taken when welding S890QL ?

When welding S890QL high-strength steel, key precautions include controlling heat input to avoid strength loss, managing hydrogen to prevent cracking (using low-hydrogen consumables, baking electrodes, ensuring dryness), maintaining strict interpass temperatures (below 250°C for Q&T), and allowing slow, natural cooling post-weld, potentially with insulation, to preserve toughness and microstructure, along with using matched filler metals and adequate PPE for fumes and electrical hazards.

4What is the hardness of S890QL ?

S890QL is a high-yield strength steel with a minimum yield strength of 890 MPa (130 ksi), but its hardness (like Brinell or Rockwell) isn't the primary spec; its strength, ductility, and toughness are key, achieved through quenching and tempering, allowing for lighter, stronger structures in cranes, bridges, and heavy equipment.

5What is the difference between S890QL and S890QL1

The main difference between S890QL and S890QL1 is their specified minimum impact toughness temperature; S890QL requires impact energy absorption at -40°C, while S890QL1 offers higher toughness, meeting the requirement at a colder -60°C, making QL1 suitable for more extreme low-temperature applications Both are quenched and tempered high-yield strength structural steels (EN 10025-6) with a minimum yield strength of 890 MPa
