S275 – a structural grade steel with a minimum yield strength of 275 N/mm²
S355 – a structural grade steel with a minimum yield strength of 355 N/mm²
S275 and S355 are two types of steel grades that can be used for a variety of structural and engineering purposes. They differ in strength and may be used for separate purposes because of their unique qualities and chemical composition. They can be ordered in a variety of different forms like bars, plates, or blocks that makes them pliable for the task at hand.
What is S355
This grade of steel is stronger than its S275 counterpart with a minimum yield strength of 355 N/mm2 resulting in its S355 name. This grade is also available in plate, round bar, flat bar, and is even available in blocks. S355 is low in carbon option, however, has more SI in its composition. This creates a highly durable steel that is used in harsh environments that are susceptible to frequent weather changes like on offshore structural sites. And like S275, this grade can also be flame cut into a profile upon request.
S355, S355JR, S355J2, S355J2+N steel in plate, round bar, flat bar and blocks. S355 steel is a low carbon steel whose specifications offer high yield strength. The average minimum yield for S355 steel is 355 N/mm² giving its name: S355.
BS EN 10025 S275 & S275JR supercedes BS4360 43A and 43B.

What is S275
This is a structural grade steel that can yield a minimum of 275 N/mm2. This grade of steel, along with S275JR, is useful for many general engineering and structural jobs and comes in a variety of forms, such as a plate, flat bar, and even a round bar. Though this grade isn't as strong of a steel as S355, it functions as a great welding metal and has good machinability. If request our company is able to flame cut a profile into a sheet of S275.
S275 suitable for numerous general engineering and structural applications
S275 & S275JR steel can be supplied in many forms including plate, round bar and flat bar. S275 gives a lower strength (than S355) but has good machinability and can also be welded. The average minimum yield for S275 steel is 275 N/mm². That is why it is called S275.

Sizes and Forms
In width, the S355 and S275 rolled sheet and plate can go up to 2000 mm, however, they have a thickness ranging from 1.5 to 25 mm for any heavy-duty job they are needed for. The forms they come in can vary from sheets and plates, round bar and flat bars and even blocks. So, depending on the strength of steel needed and the job it's intended for, there's a versatile mix of shapes and sizes that are readily available.
Key Differences
| Item | S275 | S355 |
|---|---|---|
| Yield Strength (ReH, ≤16mm) | ≥275 MPa | ≥355 MPa |
| Load-Bearing Capacity | Moderate; suitable for low-to-medium stress structures | Higher; can withstand greater loads with thinner sections |
| Chemical Composition (max%) | C≤0.21; P/S≤0.045 (JR grade) | C≤0.27; P/S≤0.045 (JR grade); higher manganese content for strength enhancement |
| Weight Efficiency | Requires thicker sections to achieve the same load capacity as S355 | Thinner sections reduce overall structure weight, saving material and transportation costs |
| Application Scope | Residential buildings, light industrial frames, support brackets, non-critical mechanical parts | Bridges, industrial plants, heavy machinery, offshore structures, high-rise buildings, crane beams |
| Cost | Lower price (approximately 10%–20% cheaper than S355) | Higher cost; but cost-effectiveness improves in projects requiring high strength-to-weight ratio |
| Low-Temperature Variants | S275J0 (0℃ impact), S275J2 (-20℃ impact) | S355J0 (0℃ impact), S355J2 (-20℃ impact), S355K2 (-20℃ high toughness) |

FAQ
What is S355JR equivalent to?
S355JR equivalent grades have very close chemical composition and mechanical properties to that of S355JR steel. Both the S355JR equivalent grades Q345B, A572 Gr 50, ST52-3, SM490B and S355JR steel are main products of BBN steel.
What is structural steel grade S355JR?
S355JR steel has a high strength-to-weight ratio, making it suitable for use in load-bearing structures such as bridges, buildings, and offshore structures. It has a minimum yield strength of 355 N/mm², making it one of the strongest steel grades available.
What is the difference between S355JR and J2?
In S355JR and S355J2 steel, JR and J2 indicates the steel needs to do +20℃ impact test and -20℃ impact test respectively. The different impact temperature is the main difference between S355JR and S355J2 steel. S355J2 steel can better adapt to low temperature work condition than S355JR steel.
What does JR mean in steel?
The J means that the test was conducted with 27 joules of energy. This is followed by either an R for room temperature, or a number referring to the temperature the tests were conducted at. So JR is room temperature (plus 20 degrees) J0 is 0 degrees and J2 is -20 degrees.
Is S355 better than S275?
This grade of steel is stronger than its S275 counterpart with a minimum yield strength of 355 N/mm2 resulting in its S355 name. This grade is also available in plate, round bar, flat bar, and is even available in blocks.
What is the hardness of S355 jr?
Grade S355JR has a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa. The impact energy at a room temperature of 20°C is at least 27 joules.
What is S355 steel used for?
This structural steel is used in shipbuilding and railway vehicle construction. S355 steel also finds optimal application for the construction of machinery such as cranes and excavators, as well as in building and piping construction, ventilation systems and pumps.
What is the price of S355JR per kg?
Mild Steel, Grade: S355JR – 0.61 USD/kg | 610 USD/ton
What is the difference between S275JR and S355JR?
S275JR is carbon steel, while S355JR is low alloy steel. Both carbon steel S275JR and S355JR low alloy steel are under EN10025-2 standard. The S355JR low alloy steel is higher steel grade than carbon steel S275JR.
