Starting out as a blue steel, as soon as Corten Steel is exposed to the elements it will naturally weather and develop a rich eye catching finish. This natural fixed coating of rust provides protection against further corrosion. During the weathering process the Corten Steel produces carbon run off which can stain adjacent materials such as stone or concrete. After the initial reactive period Corten Steel will cure and self-seal with little to no carbon run off.

FAQ

What is the weakness of corten steel?

Disadvantage 1: Susceptibility to rusting through when exposed to moisture for long periods. Corten steel tends to rust quickly if exposed to moisture for a long time. If Corten steel stays wet for too long, it does not get a chance to dry and there is a chance of rusting through.

What is special about corten steel?

Corten Steel encompasses a group of steels which possess exceptional corrosion resistance and tensile strength. Corten Steel is also known as a 'weathering' steel; as the steel forms a protective layer on its surface under the influence of the weather, and it does not need to be painted.

Is corten steel stronger than stainless steel?

Unlike stainless steel, Corten Steel is a distinct type of alloy designed to weather gracefully over time, offering structural strength and an aesthetic quality that sets it apart.

How long will corten steel last?

Generally, Corten steel will patina or rust within six months of atmospheric exposure. Most weathering steel types need wet/dry weather cycles to develop and oxidize. With the protective rust that provides corrosion resistance, Corten steel can last upwards of a few decades to over 100 years.

Do magnets stick to corten steel?

The 316 and 304 stainless steel that we sell is austenitic and therefore will not attract magnets. Which Steels are Magnetic? Other than austenitic stainless steels, most steel does attract magnets. Galvanised steel, Corten steel, mild steel, cold-reduced steel and hot-rolled steel are all magnetic.
