NM500 is an abrasion resistant plate with a hardness of 500 HBW, intended for applications where demands are imposed on abrasion resistance in combination with good cold bending properties. NM500 offers very good weldability.
Supplementary Technology: Brinell hardness, HBW according to EN ISO 6506-1, on a milled surface 0,5–2 mm below plate surface per heat and 40 tons. Tests are made for every variation of 15 mm in the thickness of plates from the same heat.
- Thickness: 3mm to130mm
- Width: 1450mm to 4050mm,
- Length: 3000mm to 15000mm

Physical Properties

Heat Treatment of NM500
- Quenching: Heat to 820-850°C, quench in oil or water.
- Tempering: Heat to 540-680°C, depending on the desired hardness.
NM500 plate is usually delivered as Q+T condition.
Characteristics of NM500 Steel
NM500 steel features a uniform microstructure that enhances its mechanical properties, maintaining high impact resistance even at low temperatures.
The steel's composition includes elements that improve its weldability and formability, making it suitable for harsh environments.
For customers, NM500 steel provides extended service life of components due to its superior wear resistance, reducing maintenance costs and downtime.
Its high strength and durability allow for thinner, lighter parts without compromising performance, leading to material and cost savings.
However, the high hardness of NM500 steel makes it challenging to machine and requires specialized equipment and techniques.
For applications needing easier machinability, 450HB steel is recommended, offering a balance of hardness and workability.
Applications of NM500 Steel
NM500 steel is widely used in industries where abrasion and impact are critical factors. Typical applications include:
Mining Machinery
Excavator buckets
Crusher liners
Conveyors, feeders, and screens
Construction Machinery
Bulldozer blades and loader buckets
Concrete mixer drums
Gravel and sand chutes
Port & Material Handling Equipment
Dump truck liners
Wear-resistant components for loading/unloading machinery
Cement & Refractory Industry
Crusher liners
Hoppers and chutes
Cyclone separators and wear-resistant linings
Industry Value:
NM500 steel significantly reduces equipment wear, lowers maintenance costs, increases operational efficiency, and allows for lighter, stronger designs to improve payload and overall cost-effectiveness.

Is NM500 suitable for high-impact applications?
Yes. While NM500 is primarily designed for abrasion resistance, it also offers good impact toughness, making it suitable for applications such as dump truck bodies and loader buckets where impact and wear occur simultaneously.
NM400 vs NM500: which one should I choose?
NM400: Suitable for moderate wear and impact
NM500: Recommended for severe abrasion and longer service life
If wear is the primary failure mode, NM500 is the better choice.
Can NM500 replace Hardox 500?
In most applications, NM500 can replace Hardox 500 with comparable wear performance. GNEE Steel provides NM500 with stable quality and competitive pricing for global customers.
Is NM500 wear-resistant steel easy to weld?
NM500 has controlled weldability. Proper welding procedures must be followed, including suitable filler materials, controlled heat input, and preheating when necessary.
