What is A633 Grade D structural steel plate?

What is A633 Grade D steel ?

ASTM A633 Grade D is a high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA) structural steel plate primarily used in heavy-duty welded, bolted, or riveted structures. It is prized for its excellent notch toughness at sub-zero temperatures (down to -45°C) and is commonly used in construction equipment, bridges, and offshore support structures.

A633 Grade D Steel

The key advantage of ASTM A633 Grade D over conventional ASTM A36 or ASTM A572 steel is its mandatory normalized fine-grain microstructure, which provides superior low-temperature toughness and structural reliability.

Core Advantages of A633 Grade D

Excellent Weldability

Designed with a low carbon equivalent (Ceq controlled below 0.45%), the steel features strictly limited contents of harmful elements: carbon ≤ 0.20%, sulfur ≤ 0.040% and phosphorus ≤ 0.035%. Reliable welded joints can be achieved without complicated preheating for plates of conventional thicknesses, compatible with various welding processes including SMAW and SAW.

Stable Mechanical Properties

Supplied under mandatory normalized delivery condition with homogeneous microstructure and a grain size of Grade 9.0 or finer.

For thickness ≤ 65 mm: yield strength ≥ 345 MPa, tensile strength ranging from 485 MPa to 620 MPa

For thickness between 65 mm and 100 mm: yield strength ≥ 315 MPa, tensile strength ranging from 450 MPa to 590 MPa

Complete heat treatment reports and mill test certificates are provided upon delivery to ensure smooth acceptance inspection.

Outstanding Low-Temperature Toughness

The normalized fine-grained microstructure enables suitable for service in environments down to -45°C. Typical project requirements specify Charpy V-notch testing at temperatures down to -50°C. Impact energy values can be supplied according to customer specifications and project standards. In actual production, both longitudinal and transverse impact energy at -50 ℃ can exceed 150 J, offering a sufficient safety margin against brittle fracture.

A633 GR D Steel Plate Sizes and weight

Weight calculation (metric)

Use steel density 7.85 g/cm³. For plate in metric units:

  • Weight (kg) = thickness (mm) × width (mm) × length (mm) × 7.85 × 10⁻⁶

Worked examples (rounded):

Thickness Width Length Weight (kg)
10 mm 2000 mm 6000 mm 942.0 kg
12 mm 2500 mm 12000 mm 2826.0 kg
20 mm 2000 mm 10000 mm 3140.0 kg
50 mm 2000 mm 12000 mm 9420.0 kg
150 mm 2500 mm 15000 mm 44,156.25 kg

(Examples calculated using the standard density constant; see formula for on-the-fly sizing in purchase quotations.)

Imperial conversion: 1 mm = 0.0393701 in; 1 kg = 2.20462 lb. For convenience many North American suppliers price in CWT (hundredweight) or $/ton (short ton 2000 lb).

FAQ

What is the delivery condition of A633 Grade D steel plate?

A633 Grade D steel plate is supplied in the normalized condition. It is austenitized at a temperature not exceeding 925℃, held for uniform heating, then cooled in still air.

Does A633 GrD require preheating before welding?

For conventional thicknesses, A633 GrD has good weldability and generally does not require strict preheating under normal ambient temperatures. For thick plates or low-temperature construction environments, appropriate preheating is recommended according to welding procedure specifications.

What is the difference between ASTM A633 and A633M?

ASTM A633 is the inch-pound unit version of the standard, while ASTM A633M is the metric (SI) unit version. Both specify identical material performance requirements, differing only in unit systems.

Can A633 Grade D plates over 72mm use single normalizing?

For A633 Grade D, single normalizing is the standard process for the full thickness range. The double normalizing requirement applies to A633 Grade E plates with thickness greater than 72mm.
