ASTM A588 weathering steel is resistant to atmospheric corrosion. It is different from our common stainless steel. Exposed to the atmosphere for a long time, ASTM A588 weathering steel will react with the atmosphere to form a dense oxide film, which will firmly adhere to the surface of steel, thus preventing further corrosion of ASTM A588 weathering steel. Many people who have used ASTM A588 weathering steel plates find that the more serious the corrosion of ASTM A588 weathering steel plates, the more durable they will be. What is the principle? Now let's answer for you.

The rust produced by steel corrosion is a porous structure, in which many micro cracks connect the pore. In this way, rust, like a sponge, can continue to absorb moisture in the air, allowing steel to further rust until it is completely rusted through. ASTM A588 weathering steel is different from ordinary steel, and it starts to rust on the surface just like ordinary steel. Because of its high alloy content, the process is even faster than ordinary steel. However, due to the more complex lattice inside the ASTM A588 weathering steel, a dark dense rust layer will grow under the loose rust on the surface. In this dense rust layer, nickel atom replaces part of iron atom, which makes the rust layer cationic selective and inhibits corrosive anion penetration. It is this dense layer of rust that makes the ASTM A588 weathering steel rust, but the interior will not continue to rust. In fact, as long as carefully distinguished, it can be seen that the surface of ASTM A588 weathering steel plate is different from that of ordinary rust: the rust of ASTM A588 weathering steel is uniform and dense, which is close to the surface of steel to protect the steel; and the rust is mottled, porous, slag will fall when touched. Such rust not only protects ASTM A588 weathering steel, but also attracts water and oxygen to the surface of steel.
ASTM A588 weathering steel plate is based on common carbon steel and with adding a small amount of weatherproof elements in the smelting process. These weatherproof elements are based on strict proportion, without affecting the steel, improve the weatherproof performance of steel. The corrosion of ASTM A588 weathering steel plate will gradually change into different colors over time, which has also been applied in some landscape design fields, effectively improving the texture of the landscape.

FAQ
What is special about Corten steel?
Corten Steel encompasses a group of steels which possess exceptional corrosion resistance and tensile strength. Corten Steel is also known as a 'weathering' steel; as the steel forms a protective layer on its surface under the influence of the weather, and it does not need to be painted.
What is Corten steel composition?
The main alloying elements are chromium nickel and copper with added phosphorous which gives it excellent self protecting qualities.
Is Corten steel A588?
ASTM A588 is also referred to as Corten® and covers structural shapes, plate, and bar. This alloy is made up of copper, chromium, nickel, and other elements that give it its weathering resistance properties.
What is the difference between A606 and A588?
The difference in our products is: A606-4 is considered weathering steel sheet with thicknesses beginning at 22 Gauge and thicker available up to 3/16". We stock A606-4 in flat sheets, coil, and panels. A588 is available in steel plate and starts at 3/16" thickness and increases up to 5" thickness.
Why is corten steel so expensive?
Corten steel is more expensive due to the materials used and the specialized production process. Traditional steel rusts and is therefore a less suitable choice for outdoor applications. Polyester is cheaper than corten steel, but does not withstand temperature changes as well and can become porous over time.
