Mechanical Properties Chemical Composition Mass Fraction (%) As Per ASTM A29

1. ASTM A105N
Standard System: ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials)
Material Type: Low-temperature steel ("N" denotes cryogenic service capability)
Key Attribute: Maintains toughness in extreme low-temperature environments1.
Application: Widely used in cryogenic service conditions for pipelines, valves, flanges, and fittings in oil/gas systems (e.g., LNG infrastructure).
What is the difference between A105 and A105N material?
As a plain carbon steel, ASTM A105 is generally cheaper than A105N, which requires additional elements such as silicon, manganese, and nickel to improve its mechanical properties. The extra cost of A105N comes with enhanced strength and toughness, making it suitable for demanding applications.
What is ASTM A105 equivalent to steel?
A 105 is an ASTM specification dealing with forged carbon steel piping components. The steel alloy involved is a low carbon, manganese and silicon containing steel similar to AISI 1330, but with lower manganese content.
2. ASTM A694 GR F65
Standard System: ASTM
Material Type: Corrosion-resistant steel with HIC (Hydrogen-Induced Cracking) resistance
Key Attributes:
HIC Resistance: Enhanced resistance to H₂S-containing corrosive environments (e.g., oil/gas pipelines), mitigating hydrogen-induced cracking risks2.
Strength Grade: F65 corresponds to minimum tensile strength 65 ksi (~448 MPa), classified as medium-high strength steel for medium/high-pressure applications2.
Application: Oil/gas transmission pipelines, high-pressure valves, and pipe fittings requiring corrosion resistance + high strength.
What is the difference between A694 F60 and A105?
Difference Between A694 F60 VS A105
A694 F60 are carbon steel and alloy steel flange specifications. A694 F60 are made of F60 carbon steel. F60 Flanges have high durability and tensile strength due to the making material. A105 Flange material is a forged carbon steel.
3. EN 10028 - P460 NH/NL1/NL
Standard System: EN10028 (European Standard)
Material Type: Low-temperature steel ("P460" indicates minimum tensile strength 460 MPa; NH, NL1, NL denote low-temperature toughness grades with varying impact toughness requirements).
Application: Cryogenic components (e.g., LNG terminals, cryogenic storage tanks) and valves/pipelines in European markets requiring strength-toughness balance at ultra-low temperatures.
EN 10028 – P460 NH/NL1/NL2
P460NH, so called for having a minimum yield strength of 460 MPa, is is a high quality pressure vessel steel grade for use in boiler and pressure vessel fabrication. It is a normalised fine grain steel with good weldability characteristics.
Other grade types include…
NL1 – is ideal for use in low temperatures
NL2 – is ideal for use in especially low temperatures
P460NH is also used in sour gas applications where the steel will be HIC Tested to gauge the materials susceptibility to hydrogen induced cracking.
