Korean Customer Visits the GNEE Steel Factory Before Ordering
Before this order was signed, the Korean buyer visited the GNEE Steel facility in person - a routine we encourage for every new pressure-vessel-grade customer:

- Plate warehouse tour: the customer walked through the SA516 Gr.70(N) inventory, checked stenciling, heat numbers and edge condition on plates that later went into their order.
- Production line review: rolling, heat treatment (normalizing furnace), cutting and blasting lines were shown in operation.
- Testing lab inspection: the customer witnessed the tensile testing machine and Charpy V-notch impact test equipment used for A516 release testing.
- Document review: sample MTCs and SGS third-party inspection reports from previous export orders were reviewed on site.
The visit ended with the packing and marking standard for sea-worthy export confirmed face to face - the same standard used for this 194-ton consignment.

What Is SA516 Gr.70(N) Steel Plate?
SA516 Gr.70(N) is the normalized version of ASME SA-516 / ASTM A516 Grade 70, the most widely specified carbon steel plate for pressure vessels and boilers:
|
Property |
Requirement |
|
Standard |
ASTM A516 / ASME SA-516 Grade 70 |
|
Delivery condition |
Normalized (grain-refined) |
|
Tensile strength |
485 – 620 MPa (70 – 90 ksi) |
|
Minimum yield strength |
260 MPa (38 ksi) |
|
Chemical composition |
Per ASTM A516 ladle/product analysis; product analysis tolerances per ASTM A20 |
|
Impact test |
Charpy V-notch per ASTM A20 (transverse specimens, as specified on order) |
Mill Test Certificate and SGS Third-Party Verification
Every plate in this order shipped with a Mill Quality Test Certificate (MTC) listing heat number, ladle chemical analysis, mechanical test results and the heat-treatment condition. For this Korean order the certificates were supported by SGS third-party verification, so the customer's QA team could clear the material into fabrication without re-testing at their own cost.

Sea-Worthy Packing and Shipping Schedule for South Korea
The consignment was packed to sea-worthy standard: steel-strapped bundles on wooden/steel saddles, seaworthy surface protection, and clear stencil marking (heat number, size, order number) on every plate for fast port-side identification. With 30% prepayment received, production was completed and shipment released within the agreed 15–20 day window, with the balance settled against a copy of the Bill of Lading.

How to Sanity-Check SA516 Gr.70(N) Plates Before Acceptance
- Match the heat number stenciled/stamped on each plate against the MTC - one-to-one, no gaps.
- Confirm the MTC heat-treatment column states Normalized; "as-rolled" is not Gr.70(N).
- Check tensile results: 485–620 MPa tensile strength, ≥260 MPa yield.
- Verify Charpy V-notch test temperature and absorbed energy against ASTM A20 or your contract line.
- Review dimensional tolerances and surface condition against ASTM A20 / A516 requirements.
- If ultrasonic testing was ordered (e.g. ASTM A435 / SE 0207 level), check the UT report covers 100% of plates.
- For third-party orders, confirm the SGS (or BV/TUV) report number matches the shipment and heat list.

FAQ
What is the difference between SA516 Gr.70 and SA516 Gr.70N?
Same chemistry family, different delivery condition: Gr.70N is supplied normalized (heated above the transformation range and air-cooled), which refines the grain and improves low-temperature toughness. For thick plates and low design temperatures, most vessel fabricators specify the N condition. Impact testing requirements are then applied per ASTM A20.
What is the price of SA516 Gr.70N steel plate per kg?
A recent export reference: USD 0.70/kg FOB China for a 194-ton, 16-size mixed order shipped to South Korea (October 2026 PI). Actual price moves with plate size mix, quantity, Charpy/UT test requirements and mill capacity - email your size list for a same-week quotation.
What documents come with an SA516 Gr.70N export order?
Standard set: Mill Quality Test Certificate (MTC), commercial invoice, packing list, Bill of Lading, and certificate of origin. SGS or other third-party inspection reports are provided when ordered. For shipments to South Korea, China–Korea FTA preferential certificate of origin documentation can be arranged to reduce import duty - confirm at booking.
