Why Cold-Rolled Plate Needs Surface Treatment?

Cold-rolled steel leaves the mill with a clean, bright surface but rusts quickly in humid air. The surface treatment is selected by the final use: forming-and-coating, storage, outdoor exposure, or decoration.

1. Pickling

Purpose: remove scale, rust and contaminants and improve surface finish and flatness. Method: soak the plate in pickling solution - hydrochloric acid is the most common pickling agent - which reacts with the surface contaminants and removes them chemically. Rinse thoroughly and dry afterwards to avoid acid residue and re-rusting. Pickled plate is the standard substrate for painting, galvanizing or oiling.

2. Oiling

Purpose: reduce secondary oxidation (flash rusting) during storage and transport. Methods: roller coating or spraying, applied evenly to form a uniform oil film. The oil film is not permanent - it needs periodic replenishment - and must be removed before painting or welding. Specify the oil type (e.g., rust-preventive oil) and film weight according to storage period.

3. Galvanizing

Purpose: form a zinc coating that resists corrosion. Methods: hot-dip galvanizing or electrogalvanizing. The galvanized layer has limited thickness and durability, so the method and coating weight must match the application - specify a coating weight (e.g., Z180-Z275) instead of a generic "galvanized" description for outdoor or corrosive service.

4. Spray Coating

Purpose: apply paint evenly to form a protective layer, improving surface quality and corrosion resistance. Methods: manual or mechanical spraying (the two differ in material usage and coverage). Coating life is limited - regular inspection and maintenance are required, and the coating system (primer + topcoat) should be selected for the environment.
