Process Performance of 16MnDR Steel Plates

 

product-373-295Good Weldability: Under general welding process conditions, good welded joints can be obtained. The tendency to produce cold cracks and hot cracks during welding is small, and the impact toughness of the heat-affected zone after welding is also high.

Excellent Cold Forming Performance: It can be cold-bent at relatively low temperatures. Generally, the bending angle of the steel plate can reach 90°, with a bending diameter of 1.5 times the thickness of the steel plate, and there are no cracks or delamination on the surface of the sample.

Acceptable Machinability: "C"-shaped chips can be formed at different cutting speeds. When the cutting speed is around 50m/min, the total cutting energy consumption is the lowest, the surface roughness value is small, the tool wear is minimal, and the machined surface quality is good.

 

Z-direction Performance of 16MnDR Steel Plates

 

 

What is Z-direction?

Z-direction performance refers to lamellar tearing resistance, and the corresponding steel is called "Z-direction steel". In welded steel structures, when the thickness of the steel plate is ≥ 40mm and it bears tensile force along the thickness direction, steel materials with Z-direction performance must be used to avoid lamellar tearing during welding.

 

Z-direction Performance and Its Impact on Steel Plates

  • After hot-rolling forming, non-metallic inclusions (such as sulfides, oxides, etc.) inside the steel plate will be pressed into thin sheets (parallel to the surface), leading to a tendency of delamination in the steel plate. This results in differences in the mechanical properties of the steel along three directions: the performance along the rolling direction is the best, followed by that perpendicular to the rolling direction, and the performance along the thickness direction (Z-direction) is the worst.
  • Thick steel plates have a higher risk of lamellar tearing due to more inclusions and thicker welds. Through special smelting treatment, Z-direction steel reduces the sulfur content to less than 1/5 of that of ordinary steel, significantly improving the ductility in the thickness direction (with a reduction of area ≥ 15%). Its performance is indexed by the reduction of area, and the marking is the base steel grade followed by "Z15", "Z25", "Z35" (the numbers represent the requirements for reduction of area).
