Below are the questions we receive most often from buyers specifying 16Mo3 pressure vessel plate. Each answer is written for engineers and procurement teams who need a direct, code-referenced response.

If you are new to 16Mo3, our complete technical guide explains what each delivery condition means at the microstructural level, with a side-by-side comparison table of process, properties and best applications - see 16Mo3 delivery conditions explained.
What Does +N Mean in 16Mo3 Steel?
16Mo3 +N means the plate is delivered in the normalized condition. The mill reheats the plate above the upper critical temperature (Ac3), typically 910–940°C, then allows it to cool freely in still air. This produces a uniform ferrite-pearlite grain structure, eliminates banding from hot rolling, and is the standard condition for most pressure vessel and boiler applications.
The "+N" symbol must appear on your EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate alongside the grade, such as "16Mo3 +N." If your MTC does not explicitly state the delivery condition, the plate has not been inspected to the condition you ordered.
What Is the Difference Between 16Mo3 +N and +N+T?
16Mo3 +N is normalized only, while +N+T is normalized then tempered at a subcritical temperature, typically 600–650°C. The additional tempering relieves residual stresses from normalizing and improves toughness and ductility, particularly through the thickness of heavy plates.
Specify +N+T when your plate exceeds roughly 50–60 mm, when tighter low-temperature Charpy values are required, or for critical components such as main boiler drums. For thinner plates in standard service, +N is usually sufficient and more economical.
Can I Use 16Mo3 +AR for Pressure Vessel Construction?
16Mo3 +AR (as-rolled) is generally not accepted for pressure-retaining parts. The plate is supplied directly from the rolling mill with no normalizing or heat treatment, leaving a banded, directional grain structure and inconsistent toughness.
It is restricted to thin, non-critical secondary components such as supports, linings and non-pressure structural parts. Most pressure vessel codes and customer specifications require +N, +N+T or +TMCP for any component that contains pressure.
What Does TMCP Mean for 16Mo3 Plate?
TMCP stands for Thermo-Mechanical Control Process. The mill rolls the plate at a carefully controlled finishing temperature, then accelerates cooling, producing a fine ferrite-bainite microstructure without a separate normalizing furnace cycle.
This grain refinement gives TMCP 16Mo3 high strength and good toughness in the as-rolled state, often at greater thickness than a normalized plate. It is increasingly specified for heavy boiler sections and large pressure vessels where thickness reduction matters.
Which Delivery Condition Is Best for High-Temperature Service?
For continuous service above 475°C, +N or +N+T 16Mo3 is preferred. The creep and oxidation behavior of normalized and normalized-and-tempered 16Mo3 is well documented under EN 10028-2 and used in long-term design codes.
+AR is not suitable for high-temperature pressure parts. TMCP 16Mo3 can be used for elevated-temperature service, but you must confirm with the mill that the plate is certified for the design temperature and the PWHT cycle - not all TMCP production is approved for creep service.

Is 16Mo3 +TMCP Equivalent to Normalized Plate?
TMCP and normalized 16Mo3 both meet the same EN 10028-2 minimum mechanical properties, but they are not fully interchangeable. TMCP achieves higher yield strength and toughness at heavy thickness through grain refinement, while normalized plate has a longer service history and wider code acceptance.
The critical issue is post-weld heat treatment: a TMCP plate must be certified to retain its properties after the PWHT cycle your vessel will receive. Without that certification, do not substitute TMCP for +N on a vessel that will be stress-relieved.
What Impact Test Temperature Does 16Mo3 +N Require?
Under EN 10028-2, 16Mo3 +N typically requires Charpy V-notch impact values of at least 31 J at 20°C in the longitudinal direction. This is the default acceptance level for commercial orders.
If your design requires testing at 0°C, –20°C or another temperature, that requirement must be agreed at the time of ordering and clearly stated on the MTC. It is not something you can request after the plate is rolled.
Can 16Mo3 +AR Be Used for ASME U-Stamp Vessels?
No. ASME Section VIII Div. 1 and most U-stamp authorizations require plate produced to a recognized material specification with normalized or TMCP condition. As-rolled 16Mo3 is not accepted for U-stamp pressure parts.
If your vessel will carry the ASME U-stamp, specify +N, +N+T or +TMCP and ensure the mill can provide the documentation your authorized inspector (AI) will require.
How Does Delivery Condition Affect 16Mo3 Welding?
Normalized and +N+T 16Mo3 are forgiving of standard preheat, interpass and heat-input procedures. Their stable microstructure tolerates the thermal cycles of conventional welding and post-weld heat treatment.
TMCP plate is more sensitive: excessive heat input or overly broad interpass temperatures can coarsen the fine grain structure and reduce toughness. The welder must follow the mill-approved WPS parameters. As-rolled plate has the least predictable heat-affected zone and is therefore unsuitable for welded pressure parts.
What Is the Maximum Thickness for 16Mo3 +AR?
16Mo3 +AR is generally restricted to thin sections, typically under 10–15 mm, and only for non-pressure applications. Beyond this range, the directional grain structure and property variation make it unsuitable for pressure-containing service.
For pressure vessel plate above this thickness, specify +N (standard), +N+T (heavy sections) or +TMCP (heavy sections requiring maximum strength).

Does TMCP 16Mo3 Need Post-Weld Heat Treatment?
Whether TMCP 16Mo3 needs PWHT depends on your vessel design, not on the delivery condition alone. If the design requires stress relieving, you must order TMCP plate from a mill that certifies the material retains its specified properties after the agreed PWHT cycle (temperature, hold time).
Buy TMCP 16Mo3 without this PWHT certification only if your vessel will not be stress-relieved. Using uncertified TMCP plate on a PWHT vessel risks unexpected toughness loss after furnace stress relieving.
How Do I Verify the Delivery Condition on an MTC?
Check the grade designation at the top of the EN 10204 3.1 certificate. It must read exactly as you ordered - for example "16Mo3 +N" or "16Mo3 +TMCP." The heat treatment record section should also show the actual normalizing or rolling temperatures.
Cross-check that the actual impact test values (temperature, absorbed energy) match the delivery condition declared. If the MTC shows a different condition than your purchase order, reject the certificate before accepting the shipment.
Is 16Mo3 the Same as A387 Grade 12?
16Mo3 is the EN 10028-2 European grade and is commonly considered comparable to ASTM A387 Grade 12 (1Cr–0.5Mo) in pressure vessel service, but the chemistries and thickness allowances are not identical. They are close in application but not a direct one-to-one material substitute.
If your specification references A387 Gr.12 and you are offered 16Mo3 (or vice versa), have the equivalence confirmed by your authorized inspector or engineering team before ordering. Do not treat them as automatically interchangeable.
Which Delivery Condition Offers the Best Value for Money?
+AR is the cheapest but the least useful for pressure parts, so it rarely delivers real value on a designed vessel. +N offers the best balance of cost, availability and code acceptance for the majority of projects.
On heavy plates, +TMCP can be the most cost-effective solution because it meets required yield strength at a lower thickness, reducing plate weight, welding cost and freight. +N+T costs more but is justified on critical thick sections where through-thickness toughness is non-negotiable.
