What Is Weathering Steel?
Weathering steel - also known as Corten-type steel - is an atmospheric corrosion resistant steel, positioned between ordinary carbon steel and stainless steel in alloy content. It is a carbon steel with small additions of copper and chromium (and sometimes nickel, phosphorus and micro-alloys), which bring its anti-corrosion performance. In addition, it offers high strength, plastic ductility, ease of profiling, welding and cutting, corrosion resistance, high-temperature resistance and fatigue resistance.

Why Use Weathering Steel
The most impressive property of weathering steel is that its anti-corrosion resistance is 2–8 times that of common carbon steel, and its paintability is 1.5–10 times better. Under suitable exposure, the surface develops a dense, adherent protective rust layer (patina) that stops further corrosion - unlike the loose, flaking rust of ordinary steel. Components made from weathering steel therefore resist rust, last longer and cost less over the service life.
Nice Appearances
With its rusty-orange coloring and weathered look, weathering steel is easy to recognize and increasingly popular in architecture and landscaping. The natural patina changes over time from bright orange to a stable deep brown, giving a warm, industrial aesthetic that suits notable sculptures, facades, garden features and roadside structures.
Applications
Railway construction and rolling stock
Automotive components
Bridge building and tower structures
Photovoltaic power stations and highway construction
Container making, ports and coastal structures
Oil and gas platforms (atmospheric-exposed members)
Practical Considerations
Weathering steel needs alternating wet-dry cycles to form and maintain the protective patina; it is not suitable for permanently wet, buried or chloride-saturated conditions without protection.
Use weathering-grade consumables for welding, and design drainage to avoid long-term water pooling.
Initial rust runoff can stain surrounding materials during the first years - plan drainage accordingly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between Corten and ordinary steel?
A: Corten-type weathering steel contains small additions of copper, chromium and other elements that form a protective patina, giving 2–8 times the atmospheric corrosion resistance of ordinary carbon steel.
Q: Does weathering steel rust?
A: Yes, but the rust layer is dense and protective; it stops further corrosion instead of flaking away, which is the key difference from ordinary steel rust.
Q: Can weathering steel be welded?
A: Yes, with standard procedures; weathering-grade electrodes are recommended so the weld metal has similar corrosion behavior to the base plate.
Q: Is weathering steel suitable for coastal environments?
A: In marine chloride atmospheres the patina may not stabilize; for coastal service apply a protective coating or select a suitable grade with design review.
