ASTM A242 steel is a standard specification for a high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA) structural steel with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance, commonly referred to as weathering steel. It is often associated with the trademark name COR-TEN® (specifically Cor-Ten A).
Key Characteristics
- Weathering Mechanism: When properly exposed to the atmosphere, A242 steel forms a stable, protective layer of rust (patina) on its surface. This patina adheres firmly to the base metal and acts as a barrier, preventing further, deeper corrosion, which eliminates the need for painting in many applications.
- Composition: The enhanced corrosion resistance comes from specific alloying elements, primarily copper, chromium, and sometimes nickel and phosphorus.
- Mechanical Properties: It offers high strength, with a minimum yield strength of 50 ksi (345 MPa) and a minimum tensile strength of 70 ksi (480 MPa) for plates up to 0.75 inches thick.
- Durability: Its atmospheric corrosion resistance is substantially better (several times that of) than that of plain carbon steels like A36 or A572-50.
- Forms: It is available in various forms, including plates, sheets, strips, coils, bars, and structural shapes.

Relationship to Corten Steel
Corten is the original trade name for a group of weathering steel alloys developed by U.S. Steel.
ASTM A242 is the official ASTM standard specification for one type of this material, often considered equivalent to Corten A steel (while ASTM A588 Grade A is essentially equivalent to Corten A and A242 is also sometimes associated with Corten B, depending on the specific application/thickness).
Common Applications
Due to its high strength, durability, and low maintenance requirements, ASTM A242 weathering steel is widely used in outdoor, unpainted applications, including:
- Bridges and other structural components
- Railway carriages and freight cars
- Shipping containers
- Industrial air pollution stacks and water tanks
- Architectural facades, outdoor sculptures, and landscaping features
