Pressure Vessel Steel Composition

Specialized steel used for manufacturing main equipment and parts of pressure vessels.

The vast majority of pressure vessels are made of tailor-welded steel plates. During the manufacturing process, steel plates must undergo hot and cold processing and welding, so pressure vessel steel is required to have good process performance, and is required to have a certain strength and sufficient toughness to withstand external loads under normal working conditions without brittle failure.

Pressure vessel steel has developed low alloy steel and alloy steel based on carbon steel. It can be seen from Table 1 that the carbon content of steel is low, generally no more than 0.20%, so that pressure vessel steel has a lower carbon equivalent (Ceq) and a lower welding sensitivity coefficient (Pam) to ensure the welding performance of the steel. In addition, the use conditions of pressure vessels are harsh. Most containers contain flammable and explosive gases and have a certain pressure, which is prone to explosion accidents. Therefore, pressure vessel steel is required to have good toughness. In order to ensure the safety of the container, low alloy steel or stainless steel is generally used to manufacture Class III pressure vessels.
