Product Overview: The ABREX™ Series
ABREX™ is a well-established abrasion resistant steel plate brand manufactured by Nippon Steel. It is specially developed to resist scratching abrasion caused by earth, sand, gravel, ore and bulk solid materials, and widely applied in global mining, construction machinery, cement production, port logistics and metallurgical industries.
The complete product range includes standard grades (ABREX 400, 450, 500, 600) and dedicated low-temperature high-toughness grades (ABREX 400LT, 450LT, 500LT). Strict control of carbon, phosphorus and sulfur reduces carbon equivalent effectively. This series achieves an excellent balance between high abrasion resistance and reliable machinability, a key advantage over conventional high-hardness wear-resistant steel.

Low phosphorus and sulfur content minimizes the risk of cold cracking during welding and cold forming. Standard surface quality and dimensional tolerances follow Nippon Steel's factory regulations for carbon steel plates.

Abrasion Resistance & Service Life
Tested under standard scratching abrasion conditions:
ABREX 400 and ABREX 500 deliver 2 ~ 5 times longer abrasion resistance compared with general mild carbon steel (SS400), which greatly lowers part replacement frequency and maintenance costs.
- Under medium scratching abrasion: Mild steel components usually fail within 1 year; ABREX 400 can serve stably for 2 ~ 3 years.
- Under severe scratching abrasion: ABREX 500 is the preferred option, with a service life of 3 ~ 4 years.
Useful life (for mild steel)
In a grinding wear environment where mild steel perforates within one year

Verified Field Application Case
A bulk cargo truck uses ABREX 400 for cargo bed liners. After transporting over 500,000 tons of ferroalloy materials, the plates remain intact after nearly 10 years of continuous operation without repair or replacement.

Weldability & Cold Bending Formability
Welding and cold forming are the main processing works for steel fabricators. The below data are official operating parameters provided by the manufacturer.
Welding Preheating Requirements
Applicable to gas shielded arc welding with low-hydrogen welding consumables (diffusible hydrogen < 3 mL/100 g) and heat input of 1.7 kJ/mm.
| Grade | Plate Thickness | Recommended Preheating Temperature |
|---|---|---|
| ABREX 400 | ≤ 20 mm | Room Temperature |
| 25 ~ 36 mm | 50 ℃ | |
| 50 mm | 75 ℃ | |
| 100 mm | 125 ℃ | |
| ABREX 500 | ≤ 11 mm | Room Temperature |
| 20 mm | 50 ℃ | |
| 25 mm | 75 ℃ | |
| 36 mm | 100 ℃ | |
| 50 mm | 125 ℃ |

The preheating temperatures shown in the table are calculations in gas shield arc welding with heat input of1.7kJ/mm using the welding material for 590MPa class or less assuming hydrogen content of 3mL/100g
HI:1.7kJ/mm Diffusible hydrogen content:<3mL/100g
RT: Room Temperature
Notes:
1. Raise preheating temperature appropriately for field welding in low-temperature environments.
2. For multi-pass welding on thick plates, maintain inter-pass temperature to avoid cracking.
Cold Bending Performance
Bending performance is tested along rolling direction (L) and cross rolling direction (C).
Definition: t = actual plate thickness
- ABREX 400: Good formability. Safe for cold bending at 15t in both L and C directions, suitable for complex folded structures.
- ABREX 500: Higher hardness brings stricter forming limits. The minimum bend radius is 10t along rolling direction; extra process control is required for cross-direction bending.
- General advice: Bending at 1t is technically difficult and not recommended for both grades.

The values shown above are a guideline for bending an edge piece in the longitudinal direction (rolling direction of plates) referred to as L. In the event of bending in the transverse direction (width direction of plates) referred to as T, please add in one more t value.
Bend conditions (atmospheric temperature and moisture, facilities, edge processing, etc.) can lead to fluctuations in the maximum bend radius. These values are a guideline.
We do not recommend subjecting ABREX 600 to bending.

ABREX Series vs China National Standard NM400 / NM500
400 HBW and 500 HBW are two mainstream hardness grades for wear-resistant steel globally. We make an objective comparison between ABREX 400/500 and Chinese domestic NM400/NM500 (executed to GB/T 24188-2009). All information is based on official standards and actual supply status.
| Comparison Item | ABREX 400 / ABREX 500 (Nippon Steel Standard) | NM400 / NM500 (GB/T 24188-2009) |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal Hardness Grade | 400 HBW / 500 HBW | 400 HBW / 500 HBW |
| Hardness Scope | ABREX400: 360~440 HBW ABREX500: 450~550 HBW | NM400: 370~430 HBW NM500: ≥470 HBW |
| Max Available Thickness | ABREX400: 100 mm ABREX500: 50 mm | NM400: ≤80 mm NM500: ≤70 mm |
| Low Temperature Grade | Dedicated LT series, stable impact at -40℃ | Standard grade meets -20℃ requirement; high-toughness version available upon custom order |
| Impurity Control | Strict P & S limitation per factory standard | Controlled in accordance with Chinese national standard |
| Delivery State | Quenched & Tempered (Q&T) | Quenched & Tempered (Q&T) |
| Supply Feature | Complete thick plate range; standard sizes available in stock, non-standard sizes by bulk order | Cost-effective, sufficient local stock, short delivery lead time |
| Main Application | International high-spec projects, cold-region equipment, thick wear-resistant parts | General mining, cement, construction machinery and conventional bulk orders |
Key Remark: Under normal working conditions, both series deliver equivalent abrasion resistance. Buyers may select materials according to plate thickness requirement, ambient temperature, project specification and procurement budget.
Typical Applications

Cnclusion
ABREX 400 and ABREX 500 are classic quenched & tempered abrasion resistant steel plates from Nippon Steel. Featuring stable hardness, reliable abrasion resistance and clear processing parameters, they perform consistently in various bulk material abrasion scenarios.
Compared with China national standard NM400 and NM500, each product has its own advantages in thickness range, low-temperature performance, stock availability and cost. For common medium abrasion projects, both grades are fully applicable. For thick plate demand, ultra-low temperature environments and international high-standard projects, ABREX series is a reliable choice. We can provide professional material selection suggestions based on your actual working conditions and order demands.
