How Weathering Steel Protects Itself
Weathering steel (corten) contains small alloy additions - copper, chromium, nickel and phosphorus - that promote a tight, adherent rust layer (patina) when the steel is exposed to air and moisture. Unlike ordinary rust, which is porous and flakes away, the patina is dense and low-porosity: it blocks oxygen and moisture, protecting the inner steel. Wet-dry cycling is essential - rain wets the surface, and drying compacts the oxide into the protective film.
What Actually Harms Weathering Steel
Prolonged standing water or immersion: the patina needs drying periods; permanent wetness prevents its formation.
Chlorides (salt): marine splash zones and de-icing salt cause pitting and uneven corrosion, especially before the patina matures.
Soil, concrete or vegetation contact: traps moisture against the surface and hinders drying.
Sheltered, permanently damp pockets that never dry out.
Note: humidity itself is not the enemy - wet-dry cycling is exactly what builds the protective layer. Weathering steel is not a high-temperature or high-pressure material; its advantage is atmospheric corrosion resistance.
Practical Protection Measures
Design drainage: slopes, drip edges and weep holes so water runs off instead of pooling.
Isolate from the ground: keep plates above soil or gravel with air circulation underneath.
Avoid permanent water contact: do not use bare weathering steel in ponds or continuously wetted sections.
Manage the initial runoff period (first 6-18 months): loose rust particles wash off and can stain concrete or paving - protect adjacent surfaces or rinse promptly.
Coastal or severe industrial atmospheres: consider a patina accelerator, clear sealant or paint system, or select a grade with higher corrosion resistance.
Periodic fresh-water rinsing in coastal areas helps the patina mature evenly.

Protecting weathering steel is mostly about environment management: give it wet-dry cycles, keep it dry between rains, keep it away from salt, standing water and soil contact, and manage the first-year runoff. Done correctly, the patina does the rest of the work for decades.
